04 Mar Heroes… why not you? (Hebrews 12:1-3)
In year 2014, this world needs heroes! The Bible tells us, “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with such a great cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset us and let us run with patience the race that was set before us. Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising the shame and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him that endured such contradiction of sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and faint in your mind “(Heb. 12:1-3).
In everyday language, the Holy Spirit is asking us to:
- Consider them
- Consider Him
- Consider yourself
Obviously, Hebrews chapter 11 precedes Hebrews chapter 12. In Hebrews chapter 11 the Word of God refers to Abraham, Joseph, Moses, David, Gideon and many more “heroes” of the faith. That is the great “cloud of witnesses” of which Hebrews 12 is speaking. The Greek language denotes a Heavenly Olympic type stadium in which the heroes of faith are figuratively rooting us on! Hebrews 12 then tells us to consider the ultimate Hero…our Lord Jesus Christ! In other words, if we would consider these Old Testament heroes and consider Jesus our ultimate Hero, we can develop heroic qualities in our own lives!
