The View (Because What Gets Your Attention… Gets You!)

Several years ago when my father was still alive here on his earth, he and I were riding bikes together on vacation. It was a beautiful evening and so we rode our bikes on the beach. We rode together quite a ways down the beach and by the time we returned back to make our way to the mainland, it was dark.

Where we vacation, there are bike paths all over the island and most of them are not lit. At the time, my father was in his 70’s and couldn’t see as well in the dark a he could when he was a younger man. Therefore I said, “Dad, why dont’ you let me go first and lead the way?!” Now my dad was a wonderful man but did have a bit of a stubborn streak in him. He replied, “No, I’ll be fine… I’ll go first.” “Dad, are you sure you can see ok?” I said back to him. “Sure I can,” he said in a gruff voice. Off he went and five seconds later I heard a big crack as he ran directly into a pole. He was fine, but his ego was clearly bruised. I said, “Dad, will you let me go first now?” “Yes,” he said coarsely.

Clearly, view is very important! What you continually see, you’ll eventually be. What you continually view, you’ll eventually pursue. What gets your attention… gets you!

Let’s take a look at our key scripture as we delve into this power subject, from Proverbs 4:20-23:

My son, attend unto my words; incline thine ear unto my saying. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life to those that find them, and health to all their flesh. Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
