Book it! (Because a Bible that is falling apart indicates a life that isn’t!) Part 17

To truly love, learn and live the Word of God…you must trust the Word of God!

Over the past few weeks we have been sharing…

7 Truths to Trust the Word of God:

  1. The Bible is historically accurate (Ps. 33:4).

          Three Tests of Historical Accuracy:
1) Eyewitness accounts (I cor. 15:6)
2) The Bible was recorded and copied with extra care.
3) Archaeological confirmation

      2. The Bible is scientifically accurate (I Tim. 6:20)

Have you noticed that science is continually evolving?

If the Bible was written by man it would have been flooded with the accepted science of the day.

5 Scientific Stupidities of 7 Truths to Trust the Word of God

      1. The earth was flat

In the time period in which the Bible was written, there was of course, the accepted science of the day.  Not until 1492 did we begin to think of the earth as a sphere, yet the Bible told us in Isaiah 40:22, “It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.”

The word “circle” in the Hebrew means sphere or globe!  Isaiah prophesied this 2,600 years before science caught up with this knowledge.  Is it possible the Bible was written by man, but inspired by God?!  (see II Timothy 3:16)  I truly do believe so!

      2. The earth was held up by something

This was the accepted science of the day.  The Greeks thought the earth was held up by Atlas.  The Hindus thought it sat on top of an elephant, which was on top of a sea turtle, which was on top of a sea serpent.  The Egyptians thought the earth was held up by five pillars.  The Egyptians were a brilliant people.  They of course constructed the pyramids and even Moses was educated by the Egyptians (see Acts 7).  If the Bible was solely written by man, surely some Egyptian science would have forged its way into at least five books of the Bible written by Moses.  Yet the Bible tells us, “He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing  (Job 26:7).

Here the Word of God tells us thousands of years before what we now scientifically know…that the earth is held up by nothing.  Is it possible that while the Bible was certainly written by men…it was inspired by God?!

Let’s continue with our series…

       3. The number of stars could be counted

An astronomer by the name of Hipparchus counted 1,022 stars in 150 B.C.  Then another astronomer by the name of Ptolemy came along 300 years later and counted 1,026!  Yet 2,600 years earlier Jeremiah wrote, “As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured; so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister unto me” (Jeremiah 33:22).

Once again, is it possible that while the Bible was written by men…it was inspired by God?!

       4. Medical science

Hippocrates (where our present medical community gets their “Hippocratic Oath” from) espouses what he thought were four scientific medical facts:  that too much yellow bile, black bile, phlegm and blood were not good and were the main causes of making humanity sick.  Therefore blood-letting was an acceptable medical practice of the day.

Even our late President George Washington was the victim of this erroneous medical practice.  President Washington had heart problems and went through three different blood-lettings.  The third one killed him!  Yet the Bible tells us in Leviticus 17:11, “For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.”

Medical science has now caught up to what the Bible taught thousands of years ago and we now know transfusions of blood is what bring “life” to the body (my blood type by the way, is B positive!).

        5. Contagious diseases

Of course, most of us have heard about the “Bubonic Plague” that ravaged Europe hundreds of years ago.  Literally 25% of Europe died as a result of the contagious plagues.  Science had no concept of germs or contagious diseases.  Yet the Bible tells us in Leviticus 13:4, “If the bright spot be white in the skin of his flesh, and in sight be not deeper than the skin, and the hair thereof be not turned white; then the priest shall shut up him that hath the plague seven days.”

Clearly, this verse tells us thousands of years before germs had caught up about the now widely accepted practice of quarantine!  Is it possible that while men certainly wrote the Bible…it was inspired by God?!

The Word of God tells us, “The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.  Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, thou shalt preserve them from this generation forever” (Psalm 12:6-7)!

You can love the Word, learn the Word, live the Word and trust the Word!

Next month we will continue our series…
