27 Mar Book it! (Because a Bible that is falling apart indicates a life that isn’t!) Part 27
For the last few weeks we have begun to discover some Truths to Trust God’s Word:
- The Bible is historically accurate (Ps. 33:4)
2. The Bible is scientifically accurate (I Tim. 6:20)
3. The Bible is prophetically accurate (Matt. 26:56)
4. The Bible is thematically unified.
5. The Bible is trusted by Jesus (Matt. 5:18)
6. The Bible has enduring power (Luke 21:33)
7. The Bible has transforming power (John 8:31-32)
Then we began to share “Four Characteristics concerning Continuing in the Word”:
- Make it the foundation of your life (Matt. 7:24).
Here the Bible tells us, “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock”. Here the Word of God clearly tells us that the storms of life will come to all our lives but if our foundation is built on hearing and doing the Word, our house (life) will stand!
I began sharing different foundations that will surely not uphold you in this house. Let’s call them “Four Faulty Foundations”:
1.) Popular culture.
2.) Tradition (Mark 7:7-9)
3.) Reason
This week let’s continue with…
4.) Feelings
We truly live in a culture that worships our feelings! Even our music reflects this. Do you remember the old song “You Lost that Lovin’ Feeling”? Do you remember the old candy bar jingle, “Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t”?
Have you ever said something like, “You know, it just doesn’t feel like a Monday.” However if the calendar says it’s a Monday…it’s Monday all day long whether you feel like it or not! We live in a culture that says “If it feels good, do it!” So you can plainly see we are a people who live by our feelings!
Even Christians have bought into this faulty foundation. I teach that you have God’s joy on the inside of you (see Galatians 5:22-23) and you can choose it anytime you want to regardless of how you feel (see Psalm 118:24). I have had over the years a few Christians push back on this Biblical concept, as they feel it’s not being authentic. They feel they are not being true to themselves by acquiescing to how they feel.
This would be true if you were a “soul”. But the Bible clearly teaches that you are a spirit, you have a soul (your mind, will and emotions) and you live in a body. However, like God, you are a spirit (see Genesis 1:26) and the Bible tells us to serve God out of our spirits (see Romans 1:9).
Remember this: Let feelings in your car, just never let them in the driver’s seat!
Next month we will continue our series!
